Howard Crane Memorial Fund Grants
The Howard Crane Fund in the Department of History of Art is designated to help graduate and undergraduate students in moments of financial hardship. Howard Crane was a longtime professor of Islamic art in our department, and the fund was established by friends, colleagues and former students in his honor and memory. It provides support for History of Art graduate students and majors for whom financial support would make a significant difference in their lives, reflecting the generosity and extraordinary kindness that Howard Crane exemplified as a professor, scholar, and friend.
Grants from the Crane fund are typically made in the amount of $500. Priority will be given to students who have not previously received a Crane Fund grant.
If graduate students or undergraduate majors are experiencing an acute need for financial assistance, they may make an application in person or via email to either the department chair or the department’s academic program coordinator, whoever they feel more comfortable explaining their situation and need to. Students may also approach a professor or advisor in the department, who can bring their request to the chair.
Applications for assistance are accepted throughout the year on a rolling basis; the application consists of a short statement explaining why the grant is needed and what its impact would be.

Cathleen M. Murnane Travel Scholarship Fund
Established November 30, 1979, from Cathleen M. Murnane's estate, friends and family, this scholarship fund supports travel expenses for qualified graduate students of the Department of History of Art for an appropriate travel opportunity which has a direct relationship to the student’s course of study at either the master’s or doctoral level.
Applications for scholarships are accepted twice per academic year. Instructions are emailed to History of Art Graduate students.
The Sara Jane Pyne Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Visual Arts
Provides scholarships for deserving students in the following visual arts departments: Art, Art Education, History of Art and Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design. These funds generally are used to support small research trips or to allow students to attend symposia and conferences.
Applications for scholarships are accepted twice per academic year. Instructions are emailed to History of Art Graduate students.
